Rare Vintage 1950s Chaïm Soutine "Dead Pheasant" Swiss Art Print
GOLDEN RULE GALLERY VINTAGE ARTA unique vintage reproduction of Chaim Soutine's Dead Pheasant (1925) printed in Switzerland in the early fifties. Image (10 1/2" x 7 1/2") tipped in to heavy vintage cream paper.
Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943) was a French painter of Belarusian-Jewish origin of the School of Paris, who made a major contribution to the Expressionist movement and modern art while living and working in Paris.
Notes on the colorplate at the time of printing: "Soutine handles dead birds far more tenderly than living people. He does not contemplate them with a severe eye or convert them into caricatures, but stresses the pathos of the immobility of these creatures made for fight and freedom. With loving care he brings out every glint of the drooping, draggled plumage; each chance effect of light is a tromaille for his brush. Indeed the artist seems bent on restoring to these " shells of death" a semblance of life, by the magic of a richly variegated palette."
