A charming art print of Chaim Soutine's Self Portrait (1918) printed in Switzerland in the early fifties. Image (8" x 9 1/2") tipped in to heavy vintage cream paper.

Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943) was a French painter of Belarusian-Jewish origin of the School of Paris, who made a major contribution to the Expressionist movement and modern art while living and working in Paris.

Notes on the colorplate at the time of printing: "Is it self-knowledge that Soutine is trying to attain in this portrait of himself? This may well be so, considering the calmness of the face and the tranquil, brooding gaze, hypnotized as it were by its own fixity. Oddly incongruous with this reposefulness is the vigor of a technique whose speciality is the expression of high nervous tension, and it is the technique, far more than the model's outward aspect, that gives this portrait its distinctive quality."
