Rare Vintage 1950s Chaïm Soutine "The Pageboy" Portrait Swiss Art Print
GOLDEN RULE GALLERY VINTAGE ARTA charming vintage reproduction of Chaim Soutine's The Pageboy (1928) printed in Switzerland in the early fifties. Image (8" x 9 7/8") tipped in to heavy vintage cream paper.
Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943) was a French painter of Belarusian-Jewish origin of the School of Paris, who made a major contribution to the Expressionist movement and modern art while living and working in Paris.
Notes on the colorplate at time of printing: "Those who have a predilection for architectonic structure may read into this portrait an attempt on Soutine's part to achieve a geometrical pattern. More probably, however, this curiously disjointed figure stems rather from the artist's emotional response than from any thought-out schema, and, in making it, he was guided by instinct rather than by intellect. And, in any case, Soutine had no use for theories so far as art was concerned."
