UNLIKE THE STROKES IN Oriental-Sweet, the heavy, dry-brush strokes in Coelin Fruit, are loose and delineate objects. A curious contrast between sky blue and wrapping-paper brown, between the brilliance of the fruit and the dullness of what surrounds it, characterizes this still life. The veins on the leaf look like the bones of a skeleton, the flowers and the pistils like some sort of instruments. Disjecta membra - scattered fragments - that barely touch each other and are in measurable spatial relation to each other. It is as though sky and earth met; the Coelin blue fruit, with its attributes, is seen on an earth brown ground. In pictures such as this one Klee achieved the ultimate simplicity he had aimed at from the outset; he achieved it with the most direct means after trying out all the potentialities of pictorial art and taking the longest possible detours.
