Commentary on the work circa 1950s: 

M. JUNIET'S PONY-CART (1908). - The Douanier's highwater-mark. His gift for contrasting whites and blacks here achieves perfection. We notice his device of putting an "accent" on a surface which might have seemed rather empty -- in the form of that incredible little black dog prancing along in front of the handsome pony, which looks as if it were a wooden horse, escaped from a round about.

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844-1910) was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He was also known as Le Douanier, a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector.
