Commentary on the work circa 1950s:

THE HUNGRY LION POUNCES ON AN ANTELOPE (1905). - Here he makes his first plunge into the exotic. Some of the ingredients may be memories of Mexico, some may come from a book he had on botany, but the greater part stemmed from his imagination. Obviously he lingered over the innocent shapes and rhythms of leaves and exploited them to the full. But under its bright green finery the jungle is a place of lurking danger and violent death, and Rousseau succeeded in conveying something of the terrors of jungle life.

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844-1910) was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He was also known as Le Douanier, a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector.
