Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) was a French painter known for his mural painting, who came to be known as "the painter for France". Puvis initially developed an interest in art after traveling in Italy, where after he spent two weeks in the studio of Eugène Delacroix and then trained under Thomas Couture, who had an important influence on his development. He decorated many public buildings in France (for example, the Panthéon, the Sorbonne, and the Hôtel de Ville, all in Paris) and also Boston Public Library (Abbey and Sargent did murals here too). His paintings were done on canvas and then affixed to the walls, but their pale colors imitated the effect of fresco. His work had an important influence on later artists such as Gauguin, Seurat, Denis, Matisse and Picasso.
