Pablo Ruiz Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France.
Still Life with Antique Head is a marvelous demonstration of light effects conceived wholly in Picasso's imagination and obeying an inner logic. He probably had in mind Greek vases and the drawings on a black ground figuring on lecythi. But whereas Greek art aimed only at decoration, Picasso concentrates on form and composition, and by a brilliantly conceived layout of planes colored solely in browns and whites, he achieves a luminosity rarely, if ever, equalled in the history of art.
