Nicolas de Staël was a French painter of Russian origin known for his use of a thick impasto and his highly abstract landscape painting. He also worked with collage, illustration and textiles. He lived only from 1914 to 1955 -- the date on this print seems to be mis-marked as a work of art created in 1959.
