Rare Vintage 1940s Rousseau "Anticipation" German Offset Lithograph

A beautiful vintage 1940s reproduction of Rousseau’s Anticipation (1886) tipped in on thick heavy paper with incredible patina. Color art plate (7 3/8" x 8 1/2") can be lifted at the bottom right corner to reveal commentary on the work in German.   

A rough translation:

“A lady, dressed according to the bell-shaped fashion of that time, lustfully walks lonely, who puts a hand on her heart like in old sentimental novels, her right wearing a fine parasol, at the edge of the forest. It's towards evening. The fine mesh of an only sparingly leafy acacia tree stands out from the horizon that stands out at sunset. The rhythmic freedom of tree drawing, the soft-atmospheric in the middle ground, everything shows us a Rousseau that has less to do with the picture arc style of the peintres populaires. You feel reminded of pictures from the circle of our German romantics, for example one C. D. Friedrich. It is an early work created around 1886, reminiscent of other datable works in the form of trunks and leaves.

The well-known stiff manner only developed later.”

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844-1910) was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He was also known as Le Douanier, a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector.
