Notes on the work of art at the time of printing:
GIORGIO DI CHIRICO (1888). HECTOR AND ANDROMACHE, 1917. (35½ X23½) GIANNI MATTIOLI COLLECTION, MILAN. — "What is needed above all," wrote Chirico in 1913, "is to purge art of everything known and familiar that it contains: every subject, every idea, every thought, every symbol must be discarded." He then painted Hector and Andromache. A gust of passion has united two dummies, made of padding and splints, and supported by a wooden scaffolding. Mere mockery? No, a meditation on the artist's means by a man who had awakened to find himself in a world cluttered with references, with pictures, books, and objects of culture, and who was bent on ignoring them for a while, before settling down and submitting to the accepted rules which, far from illuminating the world, make it contentedly opaque.
