Information on the work of art at the time of printing: ANDRÉ MASSON (1896). THE VILLAGERS, 1927. (32 × 25½* PRIVATE COLLECTION, PARIS. - This is a sand picture. Masson turned to this medium in his desire to paint as fast and as freely as he drew. He has explained how he went about it: "I laid out an unprimed canvas on the floor of my room and poured plenty of paste over it.
This I covered with sand brought from the beach. I made the first movement on an impulse, soon followed by others.
With successive coats of paste and sand, of different consistency and texture, I enriched my medium. By now the figuration had emerged, and I finished this unorthodox picture with a stroke of the brush and a dash of color." In this manner Masson made his first automatic paintings.
