"Once, while most of the world was celebrating a new year, Picasso stood before his easel painting a fable; one of violence, yet of love, too, where the Minotaur lay dying, clutching the sand. Three Muses sailing nearby discovered the monster sprawled on the beach. Two fled the grisly sight, but one stayed to do what she might to save the dread creature just beyond reach, who, when she called, struggled upright. Yet he needed first wine then her mirror to make himself well. Forever thereafter, while she floated off shore, he spent his days sitting where she had offered the only love he had found in life."
